Puppy Toilet Training
Immediately following sleep or feeding, take your puppy outside and give the same command - "be quick" is a good, polite choice. Praise the puppy the exact moment of the act, and if you're in tuned, the exact moment before the moment to instill no question as to what your puppy is doing to receive the reward. Immediate association! Clean the area that has been soiled as good practice, and because a puppy typically will not want to return to a soiled area. Consistency, as with all training, is key with this exercise. The more discipline you are with your routine, the quicker the results.
Having a puppy crate will help with toilet training. Puppies by nature will not soil the area where they sleep - provided you take them out to relieve themselves regularly. Again, if you are discipline and consistent, your puppy's association with holding and immediate praise upon relief in a designated area will be established straight away. Relieving oneself is a reward in itself if the conditions are set-up as such. Remember this if the process is taking longer than expected. Of all things, do not allow your puppy to have a mistake, even if it means keeping them under your direct supervision, perhaps on a lead at your side, every moment of the day. Yes, it's a time commitment, but overall less of a time commitment than cleaning soiled floors for weeks, or worse, months on end.
Avoid punishments for toilet training accidents that you do not witness, dogs can not generalise the exact reason of the punishment. Typically they will associate the punishment with the evidence itself and not the evidence within the confines of the house. What you may be teaching your puppy is that defecation in general is wrong and therefore must be done in your absence or where you may not find it.
