A dog must not control the household in any manner. Rules need to be established and followed consistently by all family members and visitors to the home. This is especially true for puppies. It is most important for puppies for toilet training and safety purposes, in addition to setting the hierarchy within the home. Once you have all the bits & pieces to properly feed, house and play with your puppy, and you know your puppy has already started a healthy shaping process with its mother, litter mates and breeder, take time to mentally prepare for the change in your own routine and family's routine:
- What are the rules of the household? If you have children, what do they need to know about their responsibilities with the new puppy? Should you crate train?
- What are the benefits?
- How will you make time to socialise your puppy as often as possible, every single day for the next 7, or more weeks? Where are the nearest puppy classes? and is there a waiting list?
