Step Three - My Dog's Life with Me

What breed should I get?

Now that you’ve thought through all the general ideas of your dog, get specific in terms of your dog's overall temperament, size and life requirements. What qualities can you live with, what can you not?

Size

Next, consider your preference in general weight and height of your dog

  • Giant
  • Large
  • Medium
  • Small
  • Tiny

Care

Thirdly, consider care requirements, what you would prefer, and would tolerate:

  • Exercise Requirements
  • Grooming Requirements
  • Amount of Shedding
  • Activity Indoors
  • Ease of Training

Additional things to consider

Lastly, there are three additional specific qualities that you’ll need to consider when making your final decision:

  • What is the history of the breed and how might that translate into the dog’s inherent character?
  • What are the finances associated with the breed, (include the estimated costs of a purebred puppy and the costs associated with its feeding and care)
  • What are the health problems associated with the breed?
  • Step 2 - My Life with my Dog
  • Step 4 - Pedigree or Cross-breed?
