You have over 180 breeds from which to choose. Take your time, and collect research from more than one source and/or more than one experience. Here are some really great ways to educate yourself:
Books - Start with a breed book before narrowing your choices to breed specific books.
Internet - Use Internet Search Engines (www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, et. al.) to pool breed information and contact details of specific breed clubs, breeders or enthusiasts.
Magazines - Publications targeting dog enthusiasts such as Dogs Today, Your Dog or Dogs Monthly will feature articles on specific breeds where back issues are usually available. They also include Classified sections or Directories towards the end of their publication that often include contact details of clubs, breeders or enthusiasts.
Events - Attend dog shows – they are easy to find and range from the recognition of the perfect breed standard, to obedience, agility, competitive training or just companion dog-related fun events. The best choice for learning about breeds is the Crufts sponsored annual Discover Dogs Show held in London. This event was designed 10 years ago to feature over 180 breeds and offer hands-on, one-on-one advice and guidance from dog owners and breeders.
Word of Mouth - Dog enthusiasts love to talk about their dogs. Don’t be afraid to ask questions when you come across a dog you like.
